How this estimate works

Areas and lengths are exact from your inputs; no allowance is added. Displayed values are rounded for reading only.

How the room size calculator works

A room is six surfaces. The floor and ceiling share the same area; the four walls together equal the perimeter multiplied by the ceiling height. Volume, the space inside, is floor area times height.

The surface breakdown shows how much bigger the walls usually are than the floor, which is why a paint order is often larger than people expect.

Formula and assumptions

Floor area = Ceiling area = L × W
Wall area = 2 × (L + W) × H
Volume = L × W × H
L, W
room length and width
H
floor-to-ceiling height

Assumptions and limits

  • Assumes a rectangular room with a flat ceiling.
  • Wall area is gross: no openings removed.

Worked example

A 12 × 10 ft room with an 8 ft ceiling.

  1. Floor and ceiling: 12 × 10 = 120 sq ft each.
  2. Walls: 2 × (12 + 10) × 8 = 352 sq ft.
  3. Volume: 120 × 8 = 960 cu ft.

These are the calculator’s default values, so the live result above matches this example until you change an input.

How to measure correctly

  • Measure ceiling height in more than one spot; older homes often vary.
  • For vaulted or sloped ceilings, calculate the flat part here and the sloped section separately.
  • Wall area here does not subtract doors and windows; use the wall area calculator for that.

Room Size Calculator FAQ

What is the difference between room size and square footage?

Square footage is just the floor. Room size here adds the ceiling, the walls, and the volume, which you need for paint, wallpaper, drywall, or heating and cooling questions.

How do I calculate the volume of a room?

Multiply length × width × height. A 12 × 10 ft room with an 8 ft ceiling has 960 cubic feet.

Why is the wall area bigger than the floor?

Four walls of 8 ft height around a 44 ft perimeter add up to 352 sq ft, nearly three times the 120 sq ft floor. Taller ceilings widen the gap.

How do I measure a room with a sloped ceiling?

Split it: calculate the rectangular part at the lower wall height, then add the triangular gable ends (half of base × rise) and the sloped ceiling plane separately.

Is this the same as a room’s livable square footage?

Not necessarily. Appraisal and real-estate square footage follow their own measuring standards. This tool is for project planning.
